A DNA My Dog test kit is a quick, simple, and inexpensive way to find out more about your dog's breed. Just use the swabs provided in the kit to get a DNA sample from your dog and send it back to the lab for testing. Your dog's genetic markers will be compared to those in a database of just under 100 dog breeds and if any matches are found they will reflect in the results, telling you which breeds are identified in your dog. In your results, you'll also receive information about potential health concerns of the breeds identified – all this information will help you learn more about your pet and ensure that you’re providing your furry friend with the best care for an optimal life.
Visit SiteIn your kit, you will receive a set of swabs, a return envelope, and a set of instructions explaining how to activate your kit online as well as how to take the sample of your dog’s DNA. The process of collecting a sample is quite simple. You rub the swab around the inside of your dog’s cheek for 20 seconds, let it air dry in the sample envelope for 25 minutes, seal the envelope containing the swabs and fill in your details before mailing it to the lab.
DNA My Dog offers several test kits. The DNA My Dog Breed Identification test kit is an entry-level, budget-friendly option if you are just curious about your dog’s breed and aren’t looking for in-depth information about your dog’s genetic makeup and ancestry. DNA My Dog also offers several kits with additional features including genetic screening and health screening. Let’s have a look at what DNA My Dog does and does not test for:
Ancestry
This dog DNA kit does not tell you about the ancestry of your dog but will provide data on the breeds that went into creating your canine companion.
Health
You can opt for the DNA My Dog Genetic Plan which screens for 100 genetic diseases. If you only do the breed identification test, the results will show you a predictive health plan that includes genetic conditions which the breeds detected in the test are predisposed to, but not what conditions your individual dog may have genetic markers for. The Genetic Plan will include an extensive genetic screening of over 100 of the most common breed diseases, a tool commonly used by breeders but an excellent tool for dog owner concerned about managing the potential health risks in their dog.
Traits and Features
Unlike some other dog DNA tests, this test won’t give you information on the physical traits of your dog. This test will, however, provide general information about the physical and behavioral traits of each of the breed or breeds identified in your dog.
Additional
You can upgrade your kit to learn additional information about your dog’s genetic makeup including which breeds went into making Fido. DNA My Dog offers test kits which screen for things like genetic diseases, your dog’s genetic age, and whether your dog is a wolf hybrid. They even offer a kit that tests for the breed identification of deceased dogs.
Ease of Use and Turnaround Time
The process of getting your dog’s DNA to the lab for testing is incredibly simple. Everything you’ll need to get your dog’s DNA is included in the kit. There are a few measures you’ll need to take before you take a sample of your dog’s DNA. To avoid cross-contamination, your dog should not be allowed to come into oral contact with another dog or play with shared toys for at least one hour before you take the sample.
To get the sample, all you need to do is swirl the swab in your dog’s cheek for 20 seconds, let the swab air dry for 25 minutes, pop the dry swab into the return envelope, fill in your details, and pop it into the mail.
The average turnaround time for these tests is between one and two weeks, and the results will be sent to you via email. You’ll receive three PDF documents. The first is a cute custom photo certificate. The next is a document that describes the different breed backgrounds and the medical conditions each breed is predisposed to. The third document encourages people to sign up for their “Life Plan” service which provides you with tools to help manage your dog’s health and wellness.
Accuracy
The company states that their tests are 95-99% accurate, so if the breed or breeds identified in your pooch are found in the database, you can expect a pretty accurate estimate in your results. If your dog’s breeds are not in the database, you’ll be left with some blank spaces that have yet to be filled in.
